The Lorenz Attractor

Three equations. No randomness. Infinite complexity. Discovered by Edward Lorenz in 1963 when a weather simulation diverged because he rounded 0.506127 to 0.506.

dx/dt = σ(y − x)
dy/dt = x(ρ − z) − y
dz/dt = xy − βz

σ=10, ρ=28, β=8/3. Margaret Hamilton programmed the software that made this discovery possible.
